Phase shifting
Phase Shifting explores resilience and defiance against oppression through decolonial art and sonification, embodying hope and struggle.
Phase Shifting delves into New Mexico’s colonial legacies, blending Trujillo’s Mestizo roots with Engel’s own narratives of oppression for a profound performance that challenges Western artistic norms through their movements and the sonification of our defiance. Tethered to a symbol of constraint, we represent the unyielding forces of oppression but stand as beacons of resilience and hope amidst systemic suppression. Inspired by minimalist icons Steve Reich and Terry Riley, our work captures the societal dissonance from persistent inequalities, transforming the concept of “Other” from exclusion to empowerment. This piece is a reflection on enduring struggles against oppression, symbolizing our unbroken spirit and collective resistance, underscoring a narrative of identity, resistance, and the indomitable human spirit facing silencing attempts.
